HEALTHCARE COSTS EXCEEDING
INFLATION, SAYS STEPHEN BAKER AT ICLDC

Recent forecasts (from a variety of sources)
show healthcare costs are fast overtaking the
rate of inflation and thus consuming a large
portion of the nation's GDP, according to a UAE-based
expert in healthcare management. Stephen Baker,
General Manager, Imperial College London Diabetes
Centre (ICLDC) Abu Dhabi was speaking to sector
professionals at the recent Healthcare Management
Forum 2007 in the capital.

A leading medical specialist has warned UAE health
professionals about the certain onset of Metabolic
Syndrome. Professor Philippe Froguel, Chair in
Genomic Medicine, Division of Medicine Imperial
College London, told the audience at the recent
Primary Health Forum 2007 (in Abu Dhabi), that,
simply put, the Metabolic Syndrome is a constellation
of risk factors.

The DIABETES.KNOWLEDGE.ACTION. public health
awareness campaign has been quick to respond
to recent figures published by the capital’s
Corniche Hospital on diabetes during pregnancy
by moving the roving diabetes screening booth
to the hospital.

AL AIN SEES RECORD NUMBER, SET TO REACH 5,000
BY MONTH END

More than 150 people a day are approaching the
“DIABETES. I WONDER…” booth at Al Ain’s Jimi
Mall, meaning that more than 5,000 people will
have been given diabetes awareness by month end,
and over 15,000 people since the campaign started
in the capital in April. (July 2007).

Abu Dhabi’s Imperial College London Diabetes
Centre (ICLDC) claims that research shows that
people who undergo medical examinations have
20% fewer health claims than those who fail to
get checked regularly.
