Research is a key activity of Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, one of our main priorities. It encompasses epidemiological, basic, clinical and genetic research focusing on diabetes in the UAE.
The research is world-class, directed to the high prevalence of diabetes in the country. In particular, research is being conducted to explain the reasons for the high numbers, aiming to find mechanisms to slow down and even reverse the trend.
Studies will also be performed to enhance our current best-practice management of diabetes in the centre. This will allow us to predict at the earliest possible stage, who will develop the various complications of diabetes, such as heart and kidney disease. This might signal a change in management to a more intensive therapy, including lifestyle changes and drug treatments.
