Projects include:

Abu Dhabi Diabetes & Obesity Study

• A study on the aetiology and associated risk factors of patients with obesity/diabetes within the Emirati population

• Started November 2012 with 973 adults and 1,006 children participating in the study

• Cross-sectional study investigating how a certain virus (Adenovirus 36) contributes to obesity and diabetes in the UAE

Abu Dhabi Diabetes & Obesity Study – Bariatrics

• Looking at patients with previous, or planned bariatric surgery to understand the genetic factors that contribute to obesity in the UAE

• Started April 2016 with 109 participants recruited

The role of gut hormones and Hepcidin in type-2 diabetes

• Started December 2014

• Recruited total of 1,420 of proposed 2,000 participants

• Preliminary data indicate an association between plasma Pancreatic Polypeptide levels and diabetic eye disease, which is a novel finding

Continuous Glucose Monitoring analysis during Ramadan fasting

• Phase 1 started in April 2010 and Phase 2 in September 2014

• Aims to analyze glucose variability in fasting diabetes patients

• 11 articles published on the back of the study

Energy expenditure before and during Ramadan fasting in non-obese patients

• Started June 2015

• Study to assess changes in energy metabolism due to Ramadan fasting

• No significant difference in different aspects of energy expenditure was found

Ramadan Body composition in Abu Dhabi

• Started May 2016

• Study to investigate changes in body composition with Ramadan fasting

• 125 participants recruited so far

Cardiovascular diseases risk factors in UAE adolescents and young adults with type-1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus

• Study from December 2014 - April 2015

• A collaborative study with UAE University

• Investigating the correlation of microalbuminuria with glycemic control, and its relation to cardiac autonomic neuropathy
